The timing cover is an essential component designed to protect the timing belt, timing chain or cam belt of your car from road debris, grime and gravel. The timing belt or chain of your car controls the rotation of the camshafts and crankshaft in the internal combustion engine.
Depending on the make of your car, it will have a timing belt, timing chain or cam belt. If your car has a timing belt, the timing cover protects it from road debris that can damage and break its teeth. Without the protection of the timing cover, the belt can skip, slip off the timing gears or even break. In case of engines that include a timing belt the timing cover only protects the timing belt and can be made of plastic, metal or both. In case of cars that have a timing chain, the timing cover secures the front section of the engine block with the help of a timing cover gasket.
In this way, the timing gears and chain receive lubrication with the engine oil. If the timing cover gasket breaks, you will notice engine oil leaking.
If your car has a timing chain, it will most likely have a metal timing cover. If the timing belt or chain needs to be replaced, have our expert mechanics check the timing cover for damage and replace it if needed.
Remember that oil leaks can damage the timing cover gasket, in which case the gasket can no longer protect the timing belt. If that happens, you need to replace the oil seals, timing belt and gasket together.
As part of the regular maintenance schedule, make sure the timing cover is intact and working properly. Debris and grime can not only damage the timing belt of the car, but also damage the engine. Running the car with a damaged timing cover may lead to the timing belt slipping off resulting in severe engine damage.

Replacing the timing chain is a complicated job, and the labor costs can be quite high. Below are some sample costs for having the timing chain replaced at some of the leading garage chains in the country. Prices will vary from state to state and from car to car, but they should give you a rough idea of what you can expect to pay. The timing chain works as the connection between the camshaft and the crankshaft, and the main responsibility of the chain is to operate the inlet and exhaust valve gear during the stroke cycle of the piston.
The chain keeps these valves opening and closing at specific intervals, helping the engine to function properly. Until recently, the vast majority of cars were built to use a timing belt instead of a timing chain. Using a timing belt was usually more cost effective than using a timing chain, with the only cars opting for the chain being higher-end sports cars.
Recently this trend has actually been in the opposite direction, with the timing chain taking over as the preferred option. A timing chain will need replaced far less frequently than a timing belt, resulting in a lower cost to maintain the car for the owner. While a timing chain will usually last far longer than a timing belt, it will suffer from wear and tear and will need replaced at some point during the life cycle of the vehicle.
Manufacturers were being increasingly blamed for these problems, which has led many to make the switch from belt to chain. As a result, car owners need to more aware of what the timing chain is, how to spot a potential problem with it and how often it should be inspected and replaced. Replacing a timing belt is a fairly costly repair, so many people would simply sell or trade in their car instead of having it repaired.
In many cases this would result in someone else buying the car and not being aware of the timing belt problem until it was too late. There are usually a few signs that the timing chain on your car should be replaced, some more subtle than others.
Poor fuel economy and occasional misfires could be caused by a timing chain issue, as could difficulty starting the car or the engine making a rattling sound regularly. If you notice any unusual sounds from the engine or anything out of the ordinary then you should take the car to your mechanic.
By taking the financial hit early you can avoid major engine damage which can cost thousands of dollars to repair.
Replacing the timing chain is something which should be carried out by a qualified professional rather than a repair you attempt at home.Tell us when to meet you at your home or office. Continue with your day while our mechanic fixes your car onsite. You pay only after the job is done. An engine timing belt is a fiber reinforced, toothed drive belt manufactured using durable compounds such as highly saturated nitrile. The timing belt allows the crankshaft to drive the camshafts in the cylinder head at half the RPMs of the crankshaft.
Engine designs vary, and thus the replacement procedure will vary, but broadly, the procedure is as follows:. No, were a worn out timing belt to snap while underway, perhaps on a highway, it creates a risk of complete loss of engine power while surrounded by fast moving vehicles. Once your vehicle has reached the recommended replacement mileage for the belt, you can eliminate the risk of sudden and unexpected timing belt breakage by having it replaced.
If your engine is of the interference type, it is especially important to replace the belt according to the maintenance schedule because sudden breakage of the timing belt, while the engine is running, will likely cause significant damage to internal engine components such as the valves and pistons. Following is a breakdown of the labor and parts estimates.

Timing Belt. When to replace the timing belt? Every 60kk miles. If an engine is equipped with a timing belt, the timing belt must be replaced at the service interval specified by the vehicle manufacturer regardless of whether or not any problem is visible, typically in the range of 60, to 90, miles.
Engine stops abruptly or will not start. Occasionally, timing belts can break, or skip, while the engine is running. Rough engine operation. The molded, reinforced teeth on the timing belt engage gears on the crankshaft and camshafts.
After many tens of thousands of miles, the teeth can wear or break, or the belt can stretch, thus causing the belt to jump position on the crankshaft or camshaft gears. Should the belt jump, the engine will run poorly and perhaps not at all.I went to the dealer last week to have the oil changed as I did not have time to do it on my own.
The cashier called me about an hour later and said that my timing chain was leaking wtf?
How much should it cost to have a timing chain replaced in a 2005 Toyota Tacoma 4x4?
I didn't know chains could leak. I'm about to move to MD in December to attend school full time. I don't even have a job up there yet. So, I don't have that kind of cash right now. Does anyone have any experience with these sort of things?
I know how to change the oil, fix a flat, etc. Basic stuff. Timing chains do not leak. Their covers may leak but do you have time to argue with that idiot? The chain runs in oil in an enclosure. Timing belts run in a dry case- oil will destroy a rubber timing belt.
There are two different engines for the Tacoma- the 4 cylinder or the 6 cylinder. The amount of work it takes to work on one is different from the amount of work the other one takes. You can get a whole engine removed and replaced for that much. I never worked on that engine, but I have changed a few timing belts- not Toyotas because they are more complicated. It's a pain in the butt unless the engine is not in the vehicle, and then it's just work.
Find out which engine you have and go to the library and look in Chilton's Auto Repair manual to see what timing belt or chain work involves. If there's a leak in that area the job will include replacing seals and gaskets- not rocket science.
How much needs to be done to your car will be revealed in the Chilton's manual.
